TCL TV remote not working? Here's the fix (Roku and Google TV)
TCL doesn't make one kind of smart TV. Depending on where and when you bought it, the same-looking set runs Roku TV, Google TV, or in some markets TCL's own system. Everything about fixing the remote follows from which one you have.
Tell them apart in five seconds
- A purple-ish home screen with a grid of channel tiles and a remote with a purple button: Roku TV.
- A home screen full of horizontal content rows, and a remote with a Google Assistant button: Google TV.
- A remote with a Netflix button and little else, on a plainer home screen: one of TCL's own builds.
If it's a Roku TCL
- Pull the batteries, wait ten seconds, put them back — this alone fixes most Roku remote faults.
- For a voice remote, re-pair it: hold the pairing button inside the battery compartment for five seconds until the light flashes.
- Restart the TV from the physical button if you can reach it.

If it's a Google TV TCL
- The remote is Bluetooth, so batteries first, then re-pair: hold Back and Home together until the light blinks.
- If the TV never sees it, unplug the set for a full minute — Google TV's Bluetooth stack recovers badly from a half-crash.
- Check that nothing else nearby has grabbed the remote; a second Google TV in the same room can steal a pairing.
Google TV uses a different scheme: the television shows a six-character code that the phone must send back before it will accept a single button press. It's a one-time step, but it means you need to be able to read the screen — so set it up before the remote goes missing, not after.
